Temple of Diana

I love how the modern structure recreates (albeit in an unpretentious or artificial way by the means of erecting roman-style ruins) the space that would surround a typical Roman temple in its heyday. The concrete compliments the ancient Roman marble work quite nicely, and the entire structure doesn't detract from the ruin's impressiveness; rather it emphasises and arguably exaggerates it through its starkness.

The only thing I don't quite dig is how heavy the modern addition looks. it feels stumpy. Perhaps if they had used columns to parallel that of the Roman temple. though then again visually that'll feel so much busier. Oh well.

Grid Table

I've been toying with this idea for some time since last September; perhaps this served as some form of de-stressing for me during the A-Levels prep time.

Called Grid, the table's name really speaks a lot about its physical form. The table's grid supports serve not only to create visual interest, but function as supports for glass shelves, which can be added or removed as per the user's need - in a sense, the table is modular in it's function.

Gosh it's hard to describe something that you design/create without sounding superfluous.

Anyway, the geometric beauty of a lamp that sits on the low version of Grid is the Atollo lamp, designed by Vico Magistretti, while the chair, an icon of Parisian cafes for over to a century is the 214 chair by Michael Thonet, both of which I think are truly great pieces of design.

Burberry has been doing the same ethnic-inspired for about 2 seasons plus so far, and I won't say that it looks particularly fresh, but its hard to say that they have failed to impress - in particular, the showmanship (I mean, who could forget the actual rainfall that was created for the S/S 12 show) and wearability of the featured looks is simply remarkable.

God's a Mystery at Times

Far too often, He gets sidelined in the crazy and often almost relentless pursuit for earthly fulfillment. I don't deny it, I treat God in such a manner too often to count (don't we all). Yet he still reaches out to us, in a manner that parallels our innate instinct to live on our own accord. That's truly amazes me, and for the lack of a better word, stupefies me.

Just the other day, on the way home after shopping (a particularly self-indulgent thing, I know), an old lady said "??,???" - she was referring to a pinkish sheet of paper that she prodded at my hands. At that particular point, she was to me merely a pamphlet distributor - a tired one at that. So I took it, while thoughts of my subsequent actions played out in my head: take a brief glance, fold it up, tear it up and toss it in the trash.

A brief glance was all that was necessary to know that God works in strange ways.

"Read your Bible" was the first thing that caught my eye - and guilt filled my heart. It's interesting how God doesn't condemn those willing to be saved (along with their sins), but the realisation of not doing what that is in God's will that creates this sense of damnation.

But I digress from my main point.

The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need. He lets me rest in green meadows; he leads me beside peaceful streams. He restores my soul. He guides me along right paths, bringing honor to his name. Even when I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil for You are close beside me. Your rod and Your staff protect and comfort me. You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies. You honor me by anointing my head with oil. My cup overflows with blessings. Surely your goodness and love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the Lord forever.

Psalms 23

The message was timely - emphasised undoubtedly by the selective bolding of portions of Psalms 23. I never did manage well with change and uncertainty - yes I revel in a state of stasis and the present, much like how Sylvia as well as Lucille in Housekeeping were. Very much like how these women were portrayed, routines and conventions, rigid as they may occasionally be, truly give me comfort. I am far more at ease in conversations with adults simply because of the necessity of etiquette and politeness - you know they won't be too forward about any potential criticism that would hurt because of the need to remain dignified and restrained, just as social protocol dictates. Heck, even my overwhelming desire for control over nitty-gritty details of things is a manifestation of a deep seated insecurity. But life isn't predictable. It isn't controllable. It is in perpetual flux and change - God never did promise a life of perfect serenity on this earth or realm. But he did promise comfort, his goodness and his mercy.

How apt. Seeing such a message as a new chapter of my life looms ever closer - one that I fear. Yes I'm delicate, yes I am frail, and I have no idea how the army will be like. It's not something that I will have a significant (if any at all) control over. Likewise, the impulse to steer away from God's ways, much as my heart knows is wrong, is something that is exceedingly difficult to avoid. Yet what have I to fear but the Lord - a notion that was further reinforced by the subsequent verse that appeared on this pink sheet of paper handed to me by that old lady.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, but fools despise knowledge and discipline.

Proverbs 1:7

So Lord, you know my thoughts better than I do; you know my fears and hopes better than I. Guide me and give me grace, help me live for you, and help me to trust in your unfailing protection - instill this fear in me, that I may seek you daily, not occasionally, not at the reminder of YouVersion, but from the desires of my heart. Amen.

Dancing Trees, Singing Birds

Its interesting how brushes with nature forms such an important facet of the human experience - to the point where man builds in a manner that logic and pragmatism would deem absurd (see picture 3). Regardless, this home in Tokyo is truly remarkable in it's ability to allow its inhabitants to live among the trees; savour the sounds and sights of nature and yet be within the convenience of a city. I suppose it's a little like living beside Central Park, or in a more local context, along Nassim Hill.

I'm just a wee bit (albeit pleasantly) surprised to see that this house was in Tokyo. I can't picture such lush vegetation in a city that cosmopolitan and developed.

Gosh I would love to live beside a park.

I can't help but agree with the words of the article that came with the above photos, that this building by Gordon Bunshaft is a "masterpiece of Modernism". It ticked all the right boxes - a lofty, but pragmatic volume, a great deal of transparency, the art of the defining mid-century master Bertoia, and last but perhaps most significant, it's almost comically large safe that faced the street elevation. I mean, it was not only one of the most perfect exercises of modernism, this building is also a perfect publicity exercise - suggesting both transparency and impenetrability, both of which are excellent traits for a bank.

Its a pity that it's present state is a far cry from its sleek heyday.

You can't see much from that one picture of music boxes (no. 5), but there's a large store in Otaru, Hokkaido called Otaru Orgel (apparently an "orgel" is オルゴール orugōru, the japanese word for a music box, thanks Wikipedia). There that I discovered a tune that was once lost to my memory - Sakura, Sakura, which I first heard from a keychain that we bought in Tokyo more than a decade ago. Beautiful shop, beautiful tunes in each octagonal jewel.

Apparently, "Tverrfjellhytta" is Norwegian for "Norwegian Wild Reindeer Centre Pavilion". Its amazing how Norwegian can turn something so simple (in English) to something seemingly unpronounceable via phonetics.

That aside, Snohetta's scuptural observation booth is truly quite beautiful, and it would be difficult to imagine anything else in such a setting. Nature itself seems to surround the the structure's visitor even within the structure, where the sculptural woodwork of the otherwise oblong structure mimics the strong, vast exterior it is in. It's almost spiritual, both the building and the scenery, as if one were closer to God, freed from life.

What I find particularly interesting about British architecture is it's fondness for brickwork. I mean, this love for rust-iron blocks manifests itself in all forms of architecture, from that of the Baroque era to today's modern structures (e.g. the extension for the Tate Modern). Regardless, I suppose it's a particularly defining attribute of British design, and it works beautifully in this building, where the rigidity of those tiny bricks is juxtaposed beautifully against the form that it is used to form - an arguably postmodern curved block. Equally beautiful are the somewhat organic white spiral staircase, as well as the strange closet-cabinet divider in the last picture, that mirrors both the room's form as well as evokes the classical styles of cabinetry. Quite interesting indeed.

2011, Breakfast at the Singapore Botanic Gardens

Life. A mere fleeting moment, where just about everything fades (in the twinkling of an eye); the days of our youth become a mere hazy memory, lost in the sea of present worries. Sitting in the garden's café and watching young, innocent minds fizzle away their energy in joyous play made me realise, I really do miss the innocence of youth, and to some degree, I yearn for a restoration of what was gone.

Perhaps, it is through such moments that God reminds us of how we were blessed, both then, and now. It is in losing what we once had that allows us to realise its value. Strangely enough, it took an escape from the strains of my routine to see this - I guess that just shows the extent of my life's monotony.

It would seem that it is only through such seemingly insignificant and trivial moments that one finds the source of joie de vivre - time spent in reflection, or with our loved ones.

I really should head to the Botanic Gardens a little more often; the last time, was too long ago.

Let me begin by saying, I love bread; particularly those hard crusted, baguette-esque bread rolls, and croissants. Thank God for Peck's bread; their cheese bread rolls are a great way to start the morning. And I must say, I am ecstatic to hear that Paul will be opening in Singapore (okay perhaps that is slightly hyperbolic). Honestly, I've never tried their pastries before, but from the pictures, it looks entirely promising, and I'm salivating as I'm typing this. Singapore needs good, simple bread, not the overtly toyed-with sort that one finds at BreadTalk.

Its always interesting to see fresh, independent work from any designer - be it industrial, fashion or architect; there are no limits imposed by budget, inflexible clients, just pure, unbridled creativity.

That being said, I do have one critique for Dong's 'Window Gardener' concept - the little slit meant for water. Coming from a region prone to dengue, the notion of leaving stale water out in the open doesn't exactly appeal. Perhaps a little flap to cover that would be better, and also improve the sleekness of the product's base. Just my two cents' worth.

I don't quite know what spurred me to design this, other than perhaps a little bit of boredom within me. Regardless, I suppose, as amateurish as this attempt may seem, it sums up my design ethos - a bit of the whole "Less is more" from Mies, but not being entirely sterile (i.e. like the work of Vincent Van Duysen). And now allow me to explain the details behind this little pavilion.

Rough, brutal concrete, juxtaposed against the semi-reflective aluminum support shafts, capped with a glossy white ceiling. Austere benches, for contemplation and reflection, and a tall glass wall, to protect against the elements, yet not obscure. Lofty volume, for air circulation, and simple in design, simple enough to be modular.

Comments and criticisms are more than welcome.

Its been quite a while since I've posted anything directly related to architecture on my little page, and I suspect its because I've not seen anything that really catches my eye. I honestly do believe that what catches your eye first is most likely what you like.

What I find so particularly interesting is the way that this roof-top addition was handled so differently from other projects that I've seen. Firstly, I think that it's a brilliant idea to utilise roof space in such a manner, especially if the building's structural integrity isn't compromised. That being said, what's even more brilliant is the interesting use of what Architonic termed as "fragrant climbers" to add a bit of visual interest to the building. I doubt that added to the building's green credentials - a term so flippantly used today, but it definitely humanises the addition. The gleaming white pillars, and almost transparent glass gives this addition a somewhat Japanese-esque appearance, yet retaining its British identity.

Very nice indeed.

Oh yes, I love the brown leather on those Le Corbusier sofas.
The same however can't be said about the sofa's design.

Its funny how people only take notice when the embers are dying. Well I suppose that makes sense when you take into account that there's no way to explore the tracks with trains plying its ways. Anyway, here's the result of a 4km walk with Ansen, tiresome as it may be. No time to present it properly, and I'm peeved by having to mix black and white photography with colored ones, but whatever.

Evidently, I've digressed. Its sad to see something like this lost (especially before I got a chance to experience it, like the train rides and all); in the words of a young boy we met there, "That's stealing". But at least the government's preserving some bits of it.

I don't write well when its late.

A mid-day nap is common in many warm countries, where post-lunch drowsiness is aggravated by the searing afternoon heat. While the term is Spanish in origin, the phenomenon can be observed worldwide, from Greece to Japan, where it is more commonly referred to as a "power nap"

The question then is, given the benefits of an afternoon nap (greater alertness, increased mental capacity etc.), why do Singaporean establishments still remain adamant in the adoption of such a measure? Is it the pursuit of productivity? That argument however falls flat, given the benefits of a power nap, which, when employed correctly, should produce even better results.

I don't quite know, but I remain hopeful that Singapore will one day shift away from its soulless pragmatism and be a bit more empathetic of the needs of the human spirit.

Does this rant even make any sense?

A beautiful video about the loss - of love, innocence and youth; a worthy winner of the 21st Saatchi & Saatchi New Director's Showcase. The cinematography's lovely, as is the use of vivid imagery. Almost haunting, in fact. Somehow, the protagonist reminds me a wee bit of Richard III. That being said, perhaps I'm being anal retentive here I'm somewhat bothered by the opening shot - my mind convinces me that the video would look more visually coherent had it been taken from a front view. Also, the vehicle that passed by in that same shot. yes I'm most definitely being anal here.

Regardless, beautiful video.

Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion

There's something really captivating about this triptych. I mean, its undeniably scary, with its contorted humanoid forms and what not, and that harsh orange backdrop, but perhaps it is this vividness of emotions conveyed that is so punishingly enthralling.

That being said, I don't think I would want to hang anything similar in my home. its much too creepy, especially in the likely scenario of me getting a late night snack.

1. Gleaming escalators in Festival Walk, one of the many temples to consumerism in Hong Kong 2. Tsim Sha Tsui, the weather was quite nice while we were there - warm, but nothing that I'm not used to, coming from Singapore 3. Hong Kong Skyline 4. "Mobile Softee" - a surviving relic of Hong Kong's past; something that I hope won't disappear in the relentless pursuit of progress 5. Hong Kong's billboards and neon lights 6. Urban decay in Yuen Long - I don't think that label is entirely appropriate, the place is probably just poorly maintained 7. Alley, kind of like those in the Kowloon Walled City 8. Luxury apartments above Elements, which is yet another temple to consumerism 9. & 10. Shanty apartments close to Elements - one can say that it is a stark contrast. That being said, there is a certain charm to the buildings in both pictures.

On a slightly related note (well that was actually the main purpose of the trip), I'm officially a Hong Kong PR! I've just got to wait till July to collect my Hong Kong ID.

Really nice, modernist house. Remarkably clean design, with all its sharp angular corners, yet not sterile or devoid of character (the brickwork does wonders). A cold, bleak, dust-grey box sits among homes; its sullen windows allow for mere illumination, not warmth; its harsh, austere lines reminiscent of war bunkers.

This really makes you reconsider what is, and what isn't a home. While minimalism can take on a certain spiritual aspect to it, there is hardly anything spiritual or inspiring about this space, rather, it seems almost perfectly conceivable that the couple residing in this box are sadomasochists.

I'm perfectly aware that the Japanese hold minimalism, as well as the use of concrete (Ando) with high regard. But it strikes me that the owners commissioned this house as a space for self-mortification or self-imprisonment. Its possibly an act of penance. This house is not a home - just look at the entrance, the lack of any plants are an indictment of this house's lifelessness.

Without doubt, the concrete work is beautiful - the raw textures are simply mesmerizing, and the architect most certainly met the brief of crafting a residence that "use[d] of concrete for every part of the house including floor, wall, tables etc."

I believe what I wrote above counts as a haiku? But in saying that I digress, so back to my point. It is interesting to hear the assortment of reasons that were given when people were asked why the would want to join Council. It is not the coolest CCA, nor is it the least taxing (in fact, it is perhaps the complete opposite). Yet, if my memory serves me correctly, there were close to a 120 people who expressed their interest in signing up for council. How odd. I was one of them. Their reasons ranged from wanting to try something different, or seeking personal growth, or merely because they were enamored with the prospects of being an Orientation Group Leader. But I was pragmatic; I joined for the sake of my SGC.

A little something from my election campaign, dating back to March 2010. Gosh how time flies.

Heck it was just a year ago that I was still in JC1, and fresh out of Orientation (for which I must interject here to say that I think the 32nd Student Council did quite a good job at organising), that I found myself trying to find a niche for myself. One that I felt safe, and secure in - one with people whom I was familiar with. Incidentally, I had just recently got to know Ashley back then. Ashley, Benedict, Donovan and I signed up for Council. Ashley and I had decided to campaign together during '10 Cross Country, and we distributed stickers with a somewhat cute/cheesy (you decide) campaign slogan - "Vote for S.A.", with S and A being initials for our names. Anyway to those who bothered to help with that campaign - be it in wearing the stickers, or simply by voting, thanks.

There was an interview prior to the campaigning, and in some ways, I think I got it easy - well it was interesting to say the least. But it was nothing too memorable, of which the two camps were the reverse. I still remember the two camps that we had at the start - the Selection Camp, as well as the Leadership Training Camp; they linger on like faint images in my mind. It was hellish, and I chickened out on the second. Well somewhat, I went for only two out of the four days of the camp. Allow me to enlighten you on a few events/occurrences/happenings of these camps that I find unforgettable (perhaps at least till dementia or senility hits me). 1. The innumerable (hyperbole) push-ups we did/had to do - the number that we did in that 1 day + the other 2 days was definitely more than what I had done in my whole life prior to entering JC. It was close to a thousand. Perhaps its my brain that is embellishing this figure, but it was definitely no paltry number. 2. The eggs we had to babysit during the second camp - this was most definitely something that, in retrospect, I find really hilarious. 3. The beans we had to clear up. This was really one hellish firetruck we had to deal with, picking up beans that literally littered the floor of a lecture theatre with our bare hands. Oh, and did I forget to mention, it was done in complete darkness? Actually, in retrospect, as tiring as it was, I do remember there being moments worthy of sniggers and chuckles. So you know what, as bizarre, stupid, draining and seemingly pointless some things in those camps may have seemed to me back then, as I recall them now, they don't seem as bad compared to JC life itself. And in addition, they are really memorable - things that have strangely acquired a certain endearing attribute to them. I wonder if I will think the same of my NS experience in my later years.

In the weeks to come after the 2 camps, as school work started to take its toll, as my mood began to sour, I started to question my decision to join Council. Up to this point, I make it sound as if my experience with Council was entirely negative. It was not. But rather than just leave it at that and sounding barely conciliatory, I'll illustrate my point to show that there were in fact good moments which I hold dear. The cheering season of '10 was one of such moments. Sure, it was tiring (I do get tired easily, don't I) having to do this after a day of school, but it was equally interesting and in most cases, exciting. You see, sports isn't my forte, so naturally my perception and understanding of it would be decidedly narrow. I wouldn't go so far as to say that the cheering inculcated in me an infatuation for sports in general, but it helped me gain a better understanding, and definitely a greater appreciation of the various games we went for - soccer, rugby, bowling etc. I suppose it made me a little less myopic in my view towards the sports.

I think I really owe a lot to my classmates for being so supportive of me throughout my term in Council. They are ever so tolerant of my ramblings about Council (I am a critical person, and I believe that as with everything, there are failures and pitfalls). I suspect that it is only with their explicit, or more commonly, implicit encouragement, that I found strength to carry on (Grad Night was quite a taxing planning process), in addition to the strength that came from knowing that there was a God who was also there for me. I really appreciate it that my class, 10A04 never fails to cheer loudly (albeit occasionally embarrassingly) for me during council events that they are a part of.

The first significant Council event was a Teacher's Day concert. I wasn't in the committee, but all councilors were involved in the Council dance item. Well, let's just say that dancing is, just like sports, not one of my fortes - I am ridiculously stiff. And the practice hours were arduously long, just like Commendation practices, there were nights where we ended at 10pm, only to have to arrive back in school the next day at 7+ in the morning; this went on for about 2 weeks. I kid you not when I say that that was draining. But I shall not delve any deeper into this, but rather, I will let the end results speak for the amount of time devoted.

There were some other side projects that in my opinion aren't significant enough, and as a result I don't quite remember them, but Grad Night was not one of these. But as significant as it was to me, I shall not delve too deeply into it, as I have already done that some time ago. With that being said, I'm truly glad and thankful to have been given the opportunity to be an I/C of this event. More importantly, I thank God that it went smoothly. Sure, there were regrets, but I guess the fact that it went smoothly was a blessing in its own right. But one thing that I cannot forget from my experience with planning Grad Night is, well the need to plan. That should be a useful learning point, right? But honestly, besides that, I guess I was reminded about the value of friendship - I got to know some really nice people in the process of planning Grad Night 2010, and its definitely nice to know that there is an outcome far greater (and less perishable) than the event itself. I sincerely hope that I had made a similar (i.e. positive) impact on those who have so wonderfully impacted me.

Perhaps of equal significance to Grad Night was Orientation (though in the eyes of most other councilors, Orientation was of a greater importance). Everyone was part of 2 committees during the planning process, and it was indeed quite stretching. Gosh that sounds like some form of old-folks exercise (picture them stretching with some elastic band), but it is not. Again, I digress. Returning to my point, I must say that out of all my council committees, the most enjoyable would have to be the Amazing Race planning committee. So thank you, Shuli and Joey, for making meetings so delightfully easygoing, for making things so efficient. As for the actual even itself, I'll (may) eventually come to making a complete post on Orientation 2011, but in summary, it was a really magical experience, especially the time with OG29, and Sandy.

I'm definitely getting increasingly tired as I type this (I mean, it's approaching 3am, that's understandable), and that's the main reason why the last bits of this are mostly just glossing overs. As self-centered this post may seem, I guess my main point is this, that I will ultimately miss Council because of the friendships that I have forged within it. I make it sound as though things will change, but and it arguably wont, but I'm a pessimist. As much as it may seem (to my class and some others) that I'm in jubilation now that I'm no longer in Council, the end of this epoch is something that I find bittersweet. Yes, I am glad that I am freed from the stifling rules. And I find equal joy in the satisfaction of having accomplished so much because of the opportunities provided by Council. In many [unexpected] ways, Council has really been a chance for me to grow and learn. I've learnt to lead, plan and execute a [somewhat/rather] major event - Grad Night, learnt the necessity of teamwork and delegating work (perfectionism or whatever form it manifests itself in can be quite a hindrance), as well as an assortment of other miscellaneous learning points like emceeing a "casual" event or. I suppose that it is from ending my term that I fear losing touch with those whom I have grown to love and appreciate in Council, I fear a recurrence of what that has happened to those whom I held dear in the past.

So now that I have stepped down, officially, an epoch comes to a close. And with that, is satisfaction and remorse, joy and sadness, blissful memories and trauma. But life is more than just one battle, and the next to gao dim is the A-Levels. That'll be a challenge.

For some peculiar reason, I seem to find studio living particularly interesting; perhaps it might be because of my enjoyment of privacy (and perhaps even solitude at times).

Anyway regardless of my views on studio apartments, one thing for sure is that it is relatively hard to find any major faults in the above design, which is supposed to be inspired by the waters of nearby Victoria Harbour. Every minute detail seem to evoke solace or calming waves of water. That being said, here are my few gripes with the design: 1. The use of the awful yellow box-lights - it really does not compliment the natural light. Perhaps it'll work at night, but still. 2. That 'splash of water' picture on the wall - somehow, I feel that black marble would have created a nicer effect, one that pays homage to the motif of water without being too obvious. 3. The nasty vase in the bedroom, something a bit more traditional in form, and in glass would have been nicer. Regardless, it's still a wonderful apartment overall, and heck, I'd love to live there if I could.

Gosh I should be sleeping at this hour.

Diary of a Madwoman

Madness, gender relations, technology. These were just some of the themes explored in Chin Woon Ping's Dairy of a Madwoman, which, courtesy of the SAJC drama club's performance on Friday night, gave me a chance to get out of the house. (Okay, perhaps I am exaggerating this a wee bit.)

I must say, I quite enjoyed the play, especially for its staging - the simple setting served both metaphorical and actual significance, and served only to highlight the intensity of [one of] the actor(s). But what bothered me was this: The play explored simply too many themes, to the point that its message of feminine struggle was lost underneath the mess of criticisms on technology, cultural norms etcetera. But that was not the drama club's fault, [I believe] it was the playwright's.

Prying eyes [are everywhere]

The performance of one of the mad woman was really commendable, and equally so was the use of choric effects, to portray the masses as seemingly demonic (as is in the mind of the madwoman).

That being said, I think I enjoyed the time I spent with Ansen and Joel prior to the play more than the play itself - its been a while since I've been with friends outside of a school setting.

The past few days have not been particularly fantastic for me. Rather, they have been disappointing and dreary, and I have to let it out. These 3 things in particular leave me feeling especially disgruntled.

1. PW Results (Friday) - Where do I even begin with this? I know that some people in my class are happy with their B, but I most certainly am not. And I know really well that Joel isn't exactly a happy camper either. His face went black I worked really hard for this bloody subject. As did he. As did my project work tutor. And as such, it feels horrendously miserable to not get a distinction. Its like the gold sticker that a kindergarten teacher would award a child for his or her efforts. But I rest my case, whatever I got was in accordance to the will of God, and this I will accept it. Whether I am happy or not, is entirely another matter, but no degree of sadness/anger/disappointment can change this. God help me with this.

2. BT1 Results - Econs: S, GP: C, Physics: S, Mathematics: U. I have not got back my literature results (that'll come tomorrow), but I already know that it won't be good. Heck, my results this time around are horrendous, and I am truly mortified by them. It was not about clearing the necessary rank points (though this time around, it'll be impossible), but it was about the lost pride - pride in doing something well.

3. Piano Grade 7 Results (Today) - I do not quite remember when I decided to pick up piano again, but I most certainly know why. I thought it was a shame to discard something that I have been enjoying (well mostly at least) for the past 12 years of my life, merely for the pursuit of a 2 year academic programme. I think I stretched myself a little too thinly with this pursuit, but I most certainly did not want to receive a mere pass (117/150) for this.

There are other [comparatively] minor things that have peeved me lately: The Wuthering Heights reading quizzes, the workload at school, the lack of chances/time to wander around (I find this really therapeutic) just to name a few.

Evidently, they are mostly/all related to results or academics, and I am starting to feel marginally disillusioned with the concept of education in Singapore. Slaving off gives you merely mediocrity. And the worse bit is when its close to excellence, but falls short, marginally. You still feel equally shitty, instead of feeling relief that you have rose above mediocrity. You still curse at yourself for your inadequacies. You still wallow in sorrow over the lost opportunity. In essence, you feel disappointment. I sincerely hope that what Henry Ward said is true, that "one's best success comes after their greatest disappointments." I am rambling.

I truly fear I am losing the passion to do things [well]. Or rather, that I am losing the capacity to do so.

God help me.

Its utterly tragic that such words could be blurted out by a pastor - going against a promise of not torching the Quran. In fact, he was quoted as saying "not today, not ever". It is because of people as false as him that the Muslim world finds reason to hate Christians.

He took a risk, but at what cost? Were not the deaths and violence he caused in September last year not enough? Must he have the blood of 20 innocent lives on his hands?

And as for the Afghan president, it was highly unnecessary to broadcast the work of a delusional man among his people - most of which would probably have not known too much about this incident if it were not for him. Is not national security more important than entertaining someone else's delusion?

I had quite a memorable night yesterday; it marked several firsts in my life. For starters, it's my first time eating French bistro food (no I didn't have any in Paris). It was also my first time eating quail, unless of course you consider quail eggs as also being quails (that makes you wonder, did the egg or the quail come first eh?) And I must say, while the quail was nice, it was a [insert expletive here] to cut. Perhaps ordering something else would have made the night a little easier, but heck, it was an experience eating that little [formerly] feathered thing.

P.S. The scallop entrée was divine.
Oh and the place was quite charming, pity I don't have any pictures.

Foster and Partner rarely does work like this - things that aren't out of the sleek minimalist post-modernist realm. So it's really interesting to see how they integrate Moroccan culture into the design of this bank. I really love Muslim mosaics, and though this is not as colourful as those or the souks of Morocco, its tasteful restraint makes up for that.

Earlier on, my dad was writing a testimony that he'll be submitting to the church as part of his journey towards baptism, and while he was doing it, I peered over and offered to help him edit it a little. Well that ended up being quite a bit of an edit (in terms of grammar and phrasing - he is from Hong Kong after all, English isn't exactly their lingua franca). Also, I found out a bit about his childhood through that short piece of writing.

But that is not the main point of this body of text. I'm really proud of my dad for finally deciding to accept Christ fully into his life, or at least taking a step in that direction. I won't deny that I myself have doubts about my faith at certain times, but I find it really touching to know that I can truly see how Jesus (or if you're a sceptic, the religious texts) is working in his life. I'm touched. Really. Despite these doubts, I do believe, and I am [insert appropriate word here] that my dad is showing that he'll take his walk with God seriously.

I think the Japanese are really the masters of minimal modern architecture. Its amazing how Toyo Ito can make the solid cube form seems so weightless with the use of glass. I also love how the internal structural beams allude so beautifully to the trees that line the streets outside.

Edit: The 9.0 earthquake that struck Sendai just last week did damage to the structure's interior, but not the structure itself. I suppose this just goes to show the astounding level of commitment that the Japanese put into building their structures.

One Jackson Square. Stunning curves and linear lines (oh the oxymoron)! Incidentally, there are many modern buildings that share a similar form (Singapore has some) but I really appreciate the thoughtful and deliberate attention to detail in this building (from the materials, to the carefully integrated handrails on the internal walls). That's something that is lacking in many (Singaporean) buildings. On a somewhat related note, I really love the chair in the last picture.

I think there is something intrinsically beautiful about curved staircases. Perhaps its because at certain angles, they seem to follow the form of a Golden Spiral. As for the B&W picture of the car park, I've seen something like that before, so I decided to give it a try. The way the light reflects off the satin floors is simply astounding.

I'm somewhat enamored by the grittiness of these two photos, as well as the mostly geometric forms that create them (hawhaw, self praise). Though that being said, I'm not entirely satisfied with them, I'm sure you'll see why.

I'm really ecstatic to have found this project. Just last night, as I was flipping through a book full of Vincent van Duysen's work, his design sensibility and vision reminded me of this particular project.

I chanced upon this project in a design magazine many years ago, probably when I was still in elementary school. I can't say exactly why I remember it so well, but perhaps it is the monastery's austere and minimalism that really captured me.

Rediscovering this project tonight felt almost like a sense of awakening to me - I suspect that its because this was one of the first pieces of [quality] modern architecture that I chanced upon.
