Le Grand Salon, Le Royal Monceau

I love the clean lines of art deco, and I find it really interesting to note that monsieur Philippe Starck managed to mix his normally very pop-art style with the elegance of that era very well (well mostly). More photos can be seen at the hotel’s website, but that being said, I love this one the most.

I would love to stay there for the experience.

Confidence

Somehow, this really looks great. I know I definitely lack the confidence to pull this (purple pleated pants, flower in hair, Dior clutch, disheveled face), which is why I do admire this man’s confidence.

Its strange how we all conform so willingly to societal norms, and at the same time, complain about our lack of individuality/right to express ourselves. The chance and moment is there for you to seize.

Seize it.

Damien Hirst X Converse

I think this really looks amazing, but knowing Damien Hirst (we all remember his £50 million asking price for his work “For the Love of God”, a diamond encrusted skull), this will probably be really expensive. Its limited release of 400 pairs worldwide will do nothing to lower prices, given the economic theory of demand and supply.

Montague Terrace

I am in love with the gorgeous architectural details of this place; the lofty ceilings, the Italianate fireplaces and massive doorways. Equally beautiful is how the home is tasteful and restrained – and this creates the feeling of luxury.

That being said, perhaps there’s a bit too much of one color – grey, and I suppose the house is a little lacking in terms of personality. A bookcase would add so much of this. And I really dislike those two table lamps… they seem so fussy.

Perhaps adding a bookcase would detract from the architecture. This home is lovely, though everything seems to require such a precise balance to remain in this state; its occupants probably are minimalists…

Personal Thoughts

1. I’m feeling really distant from church lately, especially when it comes to the sermons. Perhaps this is because I’ve been missing it for a while due to my exam preparations. I do fear however that I no longer find the sermons relevant. And yes, the thought of trying services at other churches like Cornerstone (basically those with a reputation for being biblically sound), which I will sooner or later I guess. I do doubt I’ll quite Grace though.

My mom used to say, grow where you are planted.

2. I am in the midst of my examinations now – my promos to be specific and damn they are a real big deal in JC. I’m just glad that mine constitutes 60% of my final grade, and not 100% like some other JCs. Its been really difficult to (start and continue) studying, there’s always the persistent impulse to take a nap, or to “take a break”. I just wonder how I’ll do.

Papers completed: H1 General Paper, H1 Chinese, H2 Economics, H2 Literature (P5)
Papers left: H2 Mathematics, H2 Literature (P1), H1 Physics

3. Grad Night and Council. I’m somewhat/mildly ticked that council activities have still been continuing this whole period despite the supposed study break that we were supposed to have. Thankfully, its been nominal. I suppose I’m more dissatisfied that the principal of a break is not respected?

4. I feel I have the tendency to push people away. Maybe subconsciously, I simply enjoy being alone? I’m not sure. Its probably quite difficult to access one’s subconscious psyche so I guess I’ll never know. Hmm… Do you (if there are any readers to this blog anyway) feel that I am this way? Oh gosh, I’m so chock full of insecurities. Hmm…

5. Lately, I’ve been using a lot of “hmm”s.

6. I cannot wait for the holidays.

7. I’m fearful of the future and the potential changes and loss it brings – Now I really sound like Lucille, a character in Housekeeping, my Literature text. Maybe I should adhere to society’s conventions. No. That’ll make me a dreadfully boring person, devoid of my quirks.

I’m getting bored with the list.

Design Fabulous

Today, I chanced upon Design Fabulous, a blog written by Andrew Kim, a Canadian product design student. I must say, his work is really awe-inspiring – that despite his young age, he is able to produce top-notch designs/concepts that have the potential of being marketed and being sold well.

One particular concept that I fell in love with was the HTC 1.

Its clean lines, revised interface as well as solid materials all constitute to a product that feels solid, that feels of quality, that feels beautiful and (perhaps even) luxurious. It is obvious that quite a lot of thought went into crafting/devising such a conceptual product, as evident through the numerous sketches and drafts that you can see on the blog page.

Another aspect of this blog that I truly adore is the innumerable (hyperbole) illustrations that fill it. Somehow, I’m very easily swayed by sketches and doodles – I feel that they are a reflection and a product of spontaneous bursts of creativity.

Hmm the writing today seems a little messy. Pardon me, I guess I’m a little sleepy…

Winter Coat

Balenciaga Fall Winter 2010 | Image Credit: Matches Fashion & 00o00

Hmm its quite funny that I bought a coat that is somewhat similar in design to this Balenciaga coat last year (i.e. Fall Winter 2009) from Hong Kong fast-fashion label Izzue. I don’t know, I find it a little odd that a fast-fashion label was a wee bit more fashion-forward/forward-thinking than a high-fashion avant garde label. Correct me if I’m wrong. I’m certain that the Balenciaga coat would definitely be better made than mine though, and it is most definitely more minimalistic/refined in terms of design compared to the Izzue coat, but heck, the Izzue one was a fraction of the cost.
